The Ellinikon Airport – the former Athens’ only Airport – has served as an international airport for over 60 years, until March 2001, when it was closed and it has been replaced by Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport. It had two terminals: the West for the domestic and East for international flights. An additional terminal was that of the former American Military Base, located in the area of Ellinikon. The airport began to be built in 1938. In 1969, the East Terminal was completed by the Finnish architect Eero Saarinen. The redevelopment of the former airport has been approved by the government and it is expected to become the symbol of a country desperately seeking to leave the economic crisis of the last decade behind. The Eastern terminal is a work of unparalleled beauty and has starred in many films and videos. Despite the somewhat retro aesthetic, it remains elegant and modern. It would be wonderful if they could serve drinks at the bar again.
